How would we tell the story of Ukrainian cinema, if its directors had not been subject to perpetual waves of arrest, censorship, shelving, marginalization, and financial disruption? We will never know. These obstacles constitute the very substance of Ukrainian cinema history, rather than the exceptions to an imaginary continuity.
We are joined this year by two distinguished guests from the Ukrainian state film archives: former director Ivan Kozlenko and the head of Research & Programming Stanislav Menzelevskyi from the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Center (Kyiv). With their help, we are offering the chance to see a near-century of Ukrainian cinema, including selections rarely seen in the US.
